Plot: The story is set in the year 2707. The film's version of the world is loosely based on that of the Mutant Chronicles role-playing game, where many technologies are steam powered and mankind has exhausted Earth’s natural resources. The protagonists must battle against mutant creatures accidentally unleashed upon the planet.

Borrowing heavily from WWI and steampunk action-horror movies, the plot revolves around a sealed away "machine" which came from space. The "machine" converts people into mutants that do little other than kill and drag new victims to the machine for conversion. Locked away 10,000 years ago, the machine was accidentally uncovered in a battle in Poland. Within six weeks the world is nearly completely conquered by the roaming mutant gangs and most people are evacuated off of the world. A group of soldiers are then assembled to take an ancient device, presumed to be a bomb, to the heart of the machine in an attempt to destroy it. Most of the group is killed or converted into mutants while the device is activated, which turns out to be an ignition device to send the machine back into space, leaving only one member of the group alive but mutated.

At the end of the Ice Age, The Machine came from the outer space with the purpose to change men into mutants. However, a hero defeated the device and a great seal was laid over The Machine. In 2707, the depleted world is ruled by four Corporations: Mishima, Bauhaus, Capitol and Imperial that are in constant war. During a battle between Capitol and Bauhaus, the great seal is broken and The Machine works again transforming soldiers and civilians in hordes of mutants. A small part of the population escapes to Mars, leaving millions of people behind. The man of faith and leader of an ancient brotherhood Brother Samuel is a believer of God and the Chronicles, a bible about the mutants. With the city under siege of the mutants, he visits the Corporations’ leader Constantine asking for an aircraft and twenty men for a suicide mission to destroy The Machine, planting a bomb and a detonator following the knowledge of the Chronicles. He recruits the tough Major ‘Mitch’ Hunter; the Bauhaus Lieutenant Maximillian von Steiner; the keeper of the Chronicles Severian that is under a vow of silence; the gorgeous and lethal Corporal Valerie Duval; Corporal Juba Kim Wu; Captain John McGuire; and Corporal Jesus ‘El Jesus’ de Barrera. Together they become the last hope of Earth against the evil mutants. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Goofs:

  • Continuity: The bead on the radar drastically changes position from one shot to the next, when the team’s transport is being attacked by the mutant flown civilian craft.
  • Revealing mistakes: When Steiner and Hunter are lowering the girls on the rope one of the shots is obviously flipped as the backdrop reverses and Steiner is using his 'left' hand, when it’s his right hand that hasn't been burned.
  • Factual errors: Military ranks worn don't correspond to the characters. Lt. Steiner, obviously German, is wearing US style rank insignia. Captain John McGuire wears the rank tape of an RAF Wing Commander. Thomas Jane is incorrectly credited as "Major" Mitch Hunter in the credits. He's referred to as Sergeant throughout the film, although his insignia is not consistent. In the trenches he's wearing Sergeant First Class chevrons, but then in the bar where Brother Samuel meets him, he's only wearing ordinary Sergeant chevrons - a 2 level demotion.
  • Revealing mistakes: With 11:04 remaining in the fight between Brother Samuel and Maj. 'Mitch' Hunter, the camera cuts to an over head shot where both of Ron Perlman hands can clearly be seen, with out the mutated arm.
  • Continuity: When Brother Samuel is going through the files on the soldiers going on the mission he mentions that Valerie Duval has 61 kills but the roman numerals in her file indicate 'XLI', which in fact means 41.
  • Continuity: At the end after Brother Samuel tells Mitch Hunter to jump and have faith, the camera cuts back to Brother Samuel still laying on the round key table, with his mutated right hand now showing normal, whereas it was mutated in the scenes before.

Trivia:

  • This film was originally offered to following directors, in order: - Stephen Norrington - John Carpenter - Roger Christian.

  • The characters of Mitch Hunter and Max Steiner were previously playable in the video game "Doom Troopers" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
  • John Malkovich shot his role in two days.
