Plot: The film tells the story of the origins of Lucian (Michael Sheen), who was the first werewolf able to take human form - to be called Lycans. Viktor (Bill Nighy), the ruthless elder of the vampires, took him home after killing his werewolf mother in a raid. Viktor envisions a race of werewolf slaves for his vampire clan that, conceivably, could keep guard during the daytime hours and toil for the vampires. As Lucian grows up at Viktor's home, his young daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), develops an attraction to the young Lycan, and Lucian becomes fond of Sonja as well.

It is revealed that Viktor has a tacit relationship with the human population of the area, whereupon he agreed to protect them from the wild werewolves that roam the countryside in exchange for a tithe. As a collection of human nobles come to meet with the vampire council for protection from the werewolves in exchange for this aforementioned tithe, Sonja goes out to guard them. Lucian hears the Lycans near Sonja and steals a horse and sword from a nearby Death Dealer. Wild werewolves proceed to attack and kill the nobles, causing Lucian to engage in a battle with them. When Lucian takes off his collar and changes into a Lycan in order to protect himself, the wild werewolves back down to his howl and leave before Lucian is shot down by Viktor's men. Viktor, despite grudgingly acknowledging that Lucian saved his daughter, notes that Lucian still transgressed the laws of the coven by taking off the collar that kept him in check (by preventing him from changing into a Lycan) and feels betrayed by what he thinks of as his favorite pet. Subsequently, he locks Lucian away after having him whipped thirty times with a three pronged chain-bladed whip.

Goofs:

  • Continuity: When Sonja cries, her first tear comes down to her mouth twice.
  • Continuity: When Lucian calls the Lycans from the castle during the big battle scene, he is shown with a full moon behind his head, and it is very dark. Not long after, he is fighting with Viktor in the tunnel, and "threatens" him with the bright sunlight, which is shining through the ceiling, even though not much time has passed.
  • Continuity: The death scene of Sonja is different from the scene that is shown in the original Underworld, during the flashback regarding how the war started. Also, when the roof opens to let in the sunlight in the first film, it shows a different roof.
  • Continuity: After Lucian's final fight with Viktor and he steps out on the ledge above all the lycans, they are all clothed like they were before the battle started. When they transformed into their wolf forms, all their clothes would have been ripped off.
  • Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Sonja's eye color keeps changing back and forth between brown (the actor's natural eye color) and whitish-blue (contact lenses). The vampires' eye-colors change throughout the movies in the first two films as well. They are often brown (natural eye-colors of the actors/actresses), but change to blue when the intensity of a situation increases. For example, Selene's eyes change from brown to blue during her fight/searching sequences in both movies, as well as her sex-scene in the second film. Kraven's eyes exhibit the same behavior in the first two films.

Trivia::

  • While filming this movie, Michael Sheen was asked by Ron Howard if he could record a quick moment of dialog for Frost/Nixon (2008). Sheen, covered in fake blood from the days filming, went to his trailer and recorded the dialog, he asked someone to take a picture of him doing it and sent it to Ron Howard, who had it framed and displayed.
  • WILHELM SCREAM: Heard when werewolves climb the wall and attack the vampire guards.
