A Christmas Carol (2009)

A Christmas Carol (2009)

First Review: When you see Jim Carrey portraying a lot of characters in a movie, you get excited because you know the potential he has when creativity is allowed (The Mask, for example). Unfortunately, this movie doesn't take advantage of their star. As a matter of fact, practically anyone could have played the roles he was given with the same excitement.

The effects here are amazing, and the computer animation is wonderful. Their treatment of Marley's Ghost is by far the best of any Christmas Carol movie I've seen. It's actually scary, which is good. However, Jim's performance as Scrooge and the ghosts seems basically phoned in. He's playing the characters pretty much standard as any other version of the film. His interpretation of the Ghost of Christmas Past is actually the weakest I've seen (their decision for his overall design was strange anyway). This is one time they probably would have come off better to just let him play Scrooge and give the ghosts to someone else. Gary Oldham does a great job as Cratchit and Marley, actually stealing the show from Carrey's generic Scrooge.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting Scrooge to play like Ace Ventura or anything, but it would have been nice to see a little spark of fun in there somewhere. It seemed to me that Carrey was actually bored with the roles (since this was motion captured from him).

Still, it's nice to see "A Christmas Carol" on screen again. This is pretty much a fairly standard version of the story and probably won't be considered "must see" for the holiday season after this year (like "It's a Wonderful Life" or even other versions of "Christmas Carol"), but it was nice to see the 3D take on it.

Plot: A Christmas Carol is a Victorian morality tale of an old and bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey), who undergoes a profound experience of redemption over the course of one night. Mr. Scrooge is a financier/money-changer who has devoted his life to the accumulation of wealth. He holds anything other than money in contempt, including friendship, love and the Christmas season. But an encounter with the ghostly figure of Jacob Marley (Gary Oldman) sets the stage for a mysterious and magical encounter with three phantasmic beings to help him realize the true magic of Christmas itself.
