First Review: Julie & Julia is a film that should be relished with gusto--accompanied by the freshest and best ingredients, pounds of butter, and bottles of the very best wine. It lovingly celebrates the life of one of American food's most influential and beloved figureheads: Julia Child--played here with zest, humor, and a sweet, subtle respect by Meryl Streep, whose performance is spectacular.

Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding.

Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime

Plot: Starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and written and directed, in her most accomplished work to date, by Nora Ephron, this film adroitly combines two separate stories told by two different books (the characters never meet) that are linked not only by subject but also by theme. The first is Julia Child's, "My Life in France," a memoir by the celebrated cook, teacher and writer whose "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and accompanying "The French Chef" television show radically changed the American culinary landscape.

The second memoir, "Julie & Julia," follows writer Julie Powell as she works her way through a self-imposed quest: cooking all 524 recipes in Child's book, all specifically formulated for "the servantless American cook," in the space of one 365-day year.

These two books are linked not only by Powell's decision, or even by the authors' shared zeal for butter, but also by a similarity in personality and situation. Both women are unstoppable forces searching for something worth their involvement, and both find that cooking completes them, makes them feel alive in ways wonderful and unforeseen.

It's also worth noting that these two stories are tales, so to speak, of sisters doing it for themselves. Though both women have loyal and encouraging husbands (played by fine actors Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina) who are crucial to their success, this is the rare Hollywood film where it's the men who are the support team, not the women.

Goofs:

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When cooking Julia Child's classic boeuf bourguignon Julie uses a Bordeaux or Bordeaux style wine rather than the burgundy or burgundy style wine (Pinot Noir) called for in all beef bourguignon recipes (including Child's).

Anachronisms: In the final scene, Julia opens a large envelope from her publisher with a copy of her first cookbook inside (published by Knopf, 1961). The envelope is of the Bubble-Wrap variety. Bubble-Wrap itself didn't receive the US Patent (Number 3,142,599) until July 28, 1964. Envelopes of that type started appearing in the late 70's.

Revealing mistakes: Julia Child's mortar is shown as a white stone or porcelain in construction. The one on display in the Smithsonian's collection is very dark, almost black, stone.

Anachronisms: The Childs moved to Paris in 1948. There is a scene, fairly early during their stay, at a reception where one can hear a famous Charles Aznavour song in the background. Aznavour was writing for and performing with others then, and only became famous as a solo singer in 1953-54.

Anachronisms: Throughout the film, Stanley Tucci's glasses can be seen to have a modern anti-reflective coating on them, years before such coatings became available. The tell-tale green sheen on the lenses is particularly visible during the outdoor wedding party.

Anachronisms: The postal vehicle appearing in front of the Cambridge house, a DJ5, was not used until 1965. The scene in the movie is 1961 or earlier.

Revealing mistakes: The scene involving Paul Childs photographing a food display in their kitchen, he uses a Rolleiflex camera. While shooting he winds the crank approximately one-and-a-half turns, when loaded with film the transport only requires 2/3 of a turn and stops automatic. So actually he was using an empty camera.

Anachronisms: When Stanley Tucci is being questioned in Washington there is a pack of Lucky Strike in a green pack. Famously "Lucky Strike green went to war" because the ink contained chromium, a strategic material. Lucky Strike green never came back and the replacement design by Raymond Lowey in white which was introduced early in the war is still in use today and was in the 50s.

Boom mic visible: When Julia is at lunch with her co-authors and shows them a new recipe, the boom mic is visible when Julia is talking.

Anachronisms: In the scene where Julia receives a letter about publishing her first book in 1961 (or earlier). The letter carrier bears a blue and red patch with a horse and rider facing left. These patches did not come into service until 1965. The appropriate patch should be a maroon patch with the horse and rider facing the right (backwards) when warn on the left shoulder.

Anachronisms: The movie opens in 1949 in Paris. In several establishing shots, including the Ile de la Cite and Notre Dame Cathedral, all the buildings appear to be a light tan sandstone color. Until the cleaning projects by culture minister Andre Malreaux in the late 1960s, all the famous buildings in Paris were quite black from centuries of pollution.

Crew or equipment visible: When Julia is learning basic tasks with the other ladies at cooking school, during the shot one can see the checkered platform under Julia's feet to make her appear taller.

  Trivia:

Because of Meryl Streep's height (5'6") several camera/set/costume tricks had to be employed to mimic Julia Child's height (6'2"). Countertops were lowered, Streep wore extra high heels, and forced perspective camera angles were used.

Eric Powell's quote ("I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by") was originally made by Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Eric explains this himself, immediately after delivering the line.

Both the Paris and Boston train terminal shots were done in the beautifully restored New Jersey Transit Hoboken Train Terminal waiting room.

The first major motion picture based on a blog.

First Review: Sometimes people randomly cross paths, and forever will be changed. That's the subtle, yet profound, message of The Soloist, a deeply moving and deeply human film about people and what, and whom, they connect with. Robert Downey Jr., who is effortlessly charismatic, plays Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, whose job it is to report on the character and characters, of Southern California. But even a (slightly) jaded reporter can be profoundly touched by a story he reports on, and then allows to unfold in real time. The subject of Lopez's column is Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx, also in a stellar turn), a homeless street musician whose lovely music--played on a battered two-string violin--Lopez hears one day on a walk not far from the Times office. Lopez learns Ayers once attended Juilliard before mental illness sent him into a spiral, and the column detailing Ayers' journey touches the community--as well as both men. The film (based on Lopez's book, follows the halting journey of their friendship, and how sometimes people's lives can't be fixed. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) cast real homeless Angelenos in the many street and social services scenes, giving the film an even more heart-wrenching and realistic patina. If the film doesn't always live up to its high aspirations (the trippy effects, which supposedly show what Ayers sees when he hears Beethoven, are straight out of a 1968 light show), it nonetheless has a big heart. And in an era in which newspapers are struggling to survive, it's heartening to see a contemporary story about a newspaper that can still affect change.

Plot: The Soloist is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a musical prodigy who developed schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard School. Ayers becomes homeless in the streets of downtown Los Angeles, playing the violin and the cello.

Columnist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) is at a dead end. The newspaper business is in an uproar, his marriage to a fellow journalist has fallen apart and he can't entirely remember what he loved about his job in the first place. Then, one day, while walking through Los Angeles' Skid Row, he sees the mysterious bedraggled figure Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), pouring his soul into a two-stringed violin.

At first, Lopez approaches Ayers as just another story idea in a city of millions. But as he begins to unearth the mystery of how this alternately brilliant and distracted street musician, once a dynamic prodigy headed for fame, wound up living in tunnels and doorways, it sparks an unexpected quest. Imagining he can change Ayers' life, Lopez embarks on a quixotic mission to get him off the streets and back to the world of music.

But even as he fights to save Ayers' life, he begins to see that it is Ayers?with his unsinkable passion, his freedom-loving obstinacy and his valiant attempts at connection and love? who is profoundly changing Lopez.

Goofs:

Continuity: When Lopez pulls over in the tunnel after spotting Ayers, his car blocks the right lane. In subsequent shots, cars are seen in the background cruising through that very same lane, one even merges into it, even though Lopez's car is blocking it just a few yards ahead.

     Trivia:

In the film, Steve Lopez is portrayed as divorced. However, his real life counterpart remains happily married. Lopez said that while having himself portrayed as recently single in the film was a bit weird, it was much more important to him that the film makers captured the themes of his articles rather than absolute facts.

Most of the homeless people shown in the film are actually homeless.

The film makers shot on "skid row" in Los Angeles, which is known for being home to one of the largest stable populations of transient persons (homeless) in the United States.

Cameo: [Nathaniel Ayers, Jr.] The subject of the movie is himself seen in the front row of the concert, during the last scene of the movie.

In the scene that Nathaniel Ayers and Steve Lopez attend a rehearsal concert, all the seats are covered with canvas. This was not cinematic imagery; this is actually done in some concert halls during rehearsals to reflect a more accurate sound as if the seats were being occupied.

The real Nathaniel Ayers was invited to view the filming of the scenes at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, but opted on the day to set up his cello and music across the street and continue playing saying "I really got something going here. I think I'm going to stay and play this just a little bit longer." Steve Lopez spoke about this incident in an interview conducted by Dave Davies for National Public Radio's program Fresh Air in April 2008. He added: "I look(ed) across (the street from Disney Hall) and there he is sawing away, as he calls it. And inside this building there are maybe three hundred people, the LA Philharmonic, the cast, the crew, are shooting a movie about his life. And I said to the producer Gary Foster 'You know what Gary, we picked the right name for this thing, The Soloist. There he is.'"

As of April 2009, Nathaniel Ayers "has a girlfriend and is doing reasonably well" according to Steve Lopez. He is also taught himself to play the flute.

Despite his distrust of two-dimensional images, Nathaniel Ayers did attend the premiere of this film in Los Angeles with his family, who flew in for the occasion. He rarely watches movies or television.

Several members of the Lamp Community, a housing and care center for the mentally ill, appeared in the film and attended the Los Angeles premiere and after party. Nathaniel Ayers is a resident and beneficiary of Lamp.

Originally planned for a November 2008 release date, the film was held back due to Paramount's tightening of the number of films it releases per year and released late April of 2009. The trailer continued to run in theaters with November as the release date.

First Review:What does the title Il Divo mean? Well, it comes from "Divo Giulio", the Italian translation of "Divus Iulius", a Latin expression used to describe Julius Caesar. "Divo" translates as "divine", and the term was employed in regards to Caesar's outstanding power as well as his alleged otherworldly ancestry (the founder of his family, the Gens Iulia, was Aeneas, son of Venus). But of course, that has nothing to do with Paolo Sorrentino's masterpiece: the title refers to another Giulio, who has also been called "Divo" because of his considerable influence and longevity (he was 89 when the film was released). That man is Giulio Andreotti, largely considered the most important political figure in 20th century Italy.

Although the unabridged subtitle of the Italian version reads "The extraordinary life of Giulio Andreotti", it doesn't chronicle all of the famed politician's life. Instead, it focuses on the most important period concerning his career: from 1978 to the early '90s. 1978 is, of course, when Aldo Moro, a member of the right-wing party Democrazia Cristiana just like Andreotti (Toni Servillo), was kidnapped and later executed by the Red Brigades. Andreotti shows no sign of emotion when he learns of the event, as usual: he has always been a quiet, secretive man. All that matters to him is the significant amount of power he gains over the years. As he points out when asked why he doesn't talk to God when he goes to church, "priests vote, God doesn't". Nevertheless, he certainly enjoys a little help from above when he is accused of various illegal activities, working with the Mafia and ordering assassinations being the most serious ones (let's not forget some conspiracy theorists believe he contributed to Moro's death, a conjecture that is dealt with in the film).

Sorrentino obviously put a lot of research into his work, and the opening title cards, which explain the movie's context, are his way of making sure viewers don't find his effort too confusing. It clearly paid off, since the picture walked away with the Jury Prize at the 2008 Cannes Festival, silencing rumors about being "too Italian". Predictably, the real Andreotti wasn't too impressed (word has it he even considered taking legal action against the filmmakers at one point). He obviously couldn't admit what happened on screen was true, so he made the following statement: "I don't agree with Sorrentino's portrayal of me, but I understand he had to make certain dramatic choices to make it interesting; my real life is actually quite boring". He has a point: there's a certain operatic grandeur to the scenes of the "Divo" walking around in government buildings and talking with his collaborators, a bit like in The Godfather. This gives the picture the greatness of a Greek tragedy, combined with the fiery spirit of politically charged movies like, say, Oliver Stone's body of work.

The Stone comparison isn't accidental, since he directed Nixon, which, much like Il Divo, depended hugely on its leading man. Stone had Anthony Hopkins, while Sorrentino has his Robert De Niro, namely the superb Servillo, whose transformation isn't a mere make-up job (to see what he really looks like, one ought to check out the equally magnificent Gomorra): the Neapolitan actor doesn't just play Andreotti, he becomes him. It's a performance that gets past mimicry or impersonation - it's Andreotti as a person, not a movie character.

So, the concerned party's opinion aside, everything speaks in favor of this ambitious, thought-provoking, stunning opus. In one word, to keep in with the complete title: extraordinary.

First Review: In the bohemian underground of World War II London, a stirring love story ignites among legendary poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys, TV's Brothers and Sisters) and the two extraordinary women who inspire him. Sienna Miller (Casanova) is Caitlin, Thomas' free-spirited wife, while Keira Knightley (Atonement) is Vera, the long-lost teenage sweetheart who later reconnects with Thomas. Despite their romantic rivalry, the two women form a surprisingly close bond. The trio is unusually blissful until Vera's husband, a handsome soldier.

Two feisty, free-spirited women are connected by the brilliant, charismatic poet who loves them both. The passion and pathos of legendary poet Dylan Thomas is told through the lives of two extraordinary women. Vera Phillips and Dylan were teenage loves; fast forward ten years and the two reconnect in London. She's working as a singer whilst he's churning out scripts for government propaganda films and living off the last in a long line of infatuated women. The two former lovers feel the thunderbolt once more, but Thomas is now married to the adventurous Caitlin. Despite their love-rival status, the women form a surprising friendship. Caitlin indulges in her own infidelities, and recognises a similar adventurous spirit in her husband. But she knows his connection with Vera is something different, not to mention dangerous. Romantic turmoil continues in Vera's life. She marries her devoted admirer William Killick, but she can't deny the chemistry between herself and Dylan, nor does she want to - even if this means betraying Caitlin. When William is posted abroad, and a pregnant Vera returns to Wales with her married friends, the battle between her heart and head becomes more intense. William returns a changed man, but neither is Vera the carefree cabaret girl he married. Neighbourhood gossip fuels her husband's jealousy towards his rival. Enraged, William stages a violent attack on Dylan - an attack that forces Vera to choose between the men in her life and the friend that she loves. Desire and guilt are complicated by love and friendship in this real-life tale set in beautiful London and the majestic Welsh countryside

Plot: A beautifully drawn love story, the film revolves around two feisty, free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas and Vera Killick, Vera's husband William Killick, and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas who loves both women. Broken promises, passion, betrayal, the shadow of war and the constant threat of imminent death push the protagonists to THE EDGE OF LOVE. By no means a biopic in the traditional vein, the story explores the bohemian underworld of war-torn London, and the intimate complexities of two young couples whose lives and loves become dangerously intertwined.

THE EDGE OF LOVE is directed by the award-winning John Maybury (Love is the Devil, The Jacket) and produced by Rebekah Gilbertson and Sarah Radclyffe. The screenplay is by Sharman MacDonald. The impressive production team includes Director of Photography Jonathan Freeman (Hollywoodland, Rome), Academy Award nominated Costume Designer April Ferry (Southland Tales, Donnie Darko), Production Designer Alan MacDonald (The Queen, Love is the Devil) and editor Emma Hickox (Becoming Jane, Kinky Boots), with music by Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, A Very Long Engagement).

Anachronisms: In a brief establishing shot of Times Square, a billboard poster for "Chicken Run" can be seen. Chicken Run was released in 2000, and Biggie died in 1997. There is also a poster for "Will & Grace" on NBC, which premiered the year after his death (1998).

Anachronisms: During Christopher Wallace's first rap battle (in the late 1980s), a graffiti drawing of Tupac Shakur can quickly be seen in the background.

Continuity: When the young Christopher Wallace is writing rhymes in his notebook on the stoop, he is left-handed. Then when the grown up Christopher Wallace is in prison writing rhymes in his notebooks, he is seen writing right-handed.

Continuity: When Biggie is free-styling, Lil Kim is first seen with her mole on the left side of her face. When it cuts back to Biggie rapping and back to her, it switches to the right side of her face. Again it cuts back to her after Biggie is seen rapping and the mole is back on the left side of her face.

Anachronisms: A 7th generation Honda Accord is shown in the movie, but 7th generation Honda Accords weren't in production until 2003.

Anachronisms: In the middle, when Biggie was crossing the street to talk to a woman, A Ford Crown Victoria stretch taxicab with the new NYC Taxi decals is seen. But Ford did not create a stretch Crown Victoria until 2002, And The new taxi decals were not used until mid-2007, 10 years after Biggie's death.

Anachronisms: In a brief establishing shot of Los Angeles, the Staples Center can be seen.
Plot: Six incarnations of Bob Dylan: an actor, a folk singer, an electrified troubadour, Rimbaud, Billy the Kid, and Woody Guthrie. Put Dylans music behind their adventures, soliloquies, interviews, marriage, and infidelity. Recreate 1960s documentaries in black and white. Put each at a crossroads, the artist becoming someone else. Jack, the son of Ramblin Jack Elliott, finds Jesus; handsome Robbie falls in love then abandons Claire. Woody, a lad escaped from foster care, hobos the U.S. singing; Billy awakes in a valley threatened by a six-lane highway; Rimbaud talks.
