First Review:New Moon, the second in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster teen-fiction saga adapted for film, is stronger than its predecessor, Twilight. Director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass), taking the helm from Catherine Hardwicke, brings a lighter, more assured touch to the sequel, which continues the star-crossed love story of mortal Bella (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson). Incidentally, Edward is absent for most of the film; after an accident on Bella's birthday reminds Edward that her life is always at risk when he's around, he chooses to abandon her, sending her into a deep depression. The only person who helps her heal her broken heart is her friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner), a member of the Quileute tribe who, as he grows taller, beefier, and more aggressive (with less clothing), comes to realize he's not entirely human either. But even his love for Bella doesn't prevent her from throwing herself in the path of danger, because that's the only time she can see visions of Edward. One such fateful misunderstanding sends Edward into the coven of the Volturi (a sort of vampire Mafia, if you will), where the most dangerous vampires hold both Edward and Bella's fate in their cold, dark hands. Much of New Moon rests on the shoulders of Lautner, so scrawny in Twilight, who famously packed on the muscle to avoid getting recast. He's very nearly successful in carrying the load, but the cheese-tastic beefcake scenes disservice him, and Jacob and Bella's complicated friendship stumbles on its way to any kind of love triangle. Some of that blame lies with Stewart, who understandably holds her emotions close to her chest but reveals much too little (c'mon, even an angsty girl has to be a little joyful in the arms of two different hunks). As is with the book, the film is just a bridge between sagas, so the plot drags and not a lot happens. Fortunately, while Twilight was trapped in its own self-consciousness, the wobbly-legged cast seems to have found stronger footing in New Moon; the jokes come faster, the writing (by Melissa Rosenberg, who also scribed Twilight) is a hair wittier. (Even Pattinson seems more comfortable in Edward's skin.) The Volturi, highlighted by Michael Sheen's Aro and Dakota Fanning's Jane, also make an all-too-brief impression, but at least there's more to look forward to when Eclipse, the third installment, is released.

Plot: On her 18th birthday, Bella Swan wakes up from a dream in which she sees herself as an old woman. She expresses her distaste with growing older than her boyfriend Edward Cullen, a vampire who stopped aging at 17. Edward's family throws Bella a birthday party. While unwrapping a gift, Bella gets a paper cut, which causes Edward's adoptive brother, Jasper, to be overwhelmed by her blood's scent and attempt to kill her. Realizing the danger he and his family pose to Bella, Edward decides to end their relationship, and the Cullens move away from Forks, Washington.

Edward's departure leaves Bella heartbroken and depressed for months. However, when her father, Charlie, attempts to send her to live with her mother, Bella agrees to spend time with her friends. After seeing a movie with Jessica, Bella sees a group of men who remind her of a time when Edward rescued her previously, and she is surprised to see a vision of Edward warning her against approaching them. Bella discovers that all thrill-seeking activities grant her visions of Edward. She also finds comfort in her deepening friendship with Jacob Black, a cheerful companion who eases her pain over losing Edward. When Jacob is unable to see Bella for weeks, she discovers that he is a werewolf, an age-old enemy of vampires. Jacob's pack members are on constant patrol for Victoria, a vampire searching to kill Bella, leaving Jacob little time to spend with Bella. Alone, Bella returns to seeking thrill-inducing activities.

A series of miscommunications leads Edward to believe that Bella has killed herself while cliff-diving. Distraught over her supposed suicide, Edward flees to Italy to provoke the Volturi, a powerful coven of vampires who are capable of killing him. Alice, Edward's adoptive sister, and Bella rush to Italy to save Edward, and arrive just in time to stop him. However, the Volturi decide that Bella, a human who knows that vampires exist, must either be killed or transformed into a vampire herself. Alice stops them from killing her by showing them a vision of the future in which Bella has been transformed. Once they return home to Forks, Edward tells Bella that he has always loved her and only left town to protect her. She forgives him, and the Cullens vote in favor of Bella being transformed into a vampire, to Edward and Jacob's dismay. Edward gives Bella a choice: either she lets Alice change her after their graduation, or, if Bella agrees to marry him, he will change her himself. However, Jacob reminds them of a treaty the Cullens have made with the werewolves: they will not attack each other, as long as the Cullens never bite a human.

Goofs:

Revealing mistakes: At the birthday party, when Dr. Cullen is stitching Bella up, they show a close up of a syringe with a type of liquid in it. Regardless of the type of liquid, in order to inject anything into the human body, the syringe must be free of air bubbles. The syringe clearly has a large bubble of air.

Continuity: While Bella and Edward are embracing each other right after they met up in Volterra and are interrupted, Edward's body is not completely "whited-out", only his face is. This is going on the entire time he is speaking to someone in the Volturri. His face is extremely pale, but his neck and abdomen is the color of a human being.

Continuity: After fighting with the Volturi, Edward's robe changes between being tied closed and completely open.

Revealing mistakes: In the scene in Bella's bedroom after Edward's return, the camera shakes as if someone has bumped into it.

Continuity: In the scene when Bella first joins her friends at the table in the school cafeteria after her long depression, as she is talking to Mike, if you look at her hair by her left ear, you can see a bobby pin that may have fallen out of her hair piece or is just not hidden well. When the scenes changes to Mike and then back to Bella the bobby pin is gone.

Continuity: During the scene where Charlie is telling Bella she is going back to Jacksonville because of her depression, the part in Bella's hair changes slightly between shots.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Ben takes the fingerprint of Abigail to be able to descent to the conservation room via the lift. When in the elevator, he removes his glove. He should have kept it to be able to call the lift again.

Continuity: Bella's hair color changes frequently. In some shots it is clearly black, whilst in others it is Bella's normal brown. This is because the actress portraying her, Kristen Stewart, cut and dyed her hair during filming.

 Trivia:

Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight (2008/I), the first movie in the Twilight Saga, was set to be the director of 'New Moon' as well. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, Hardwicke had to back out.

After months of speculation and rumors, director Chris Weitz and the novel's author, Stephenie Meyer, confirmed on her official website that Taylor Lautner would be reprising his role as Jacob Black. It was doubted as the filmmakers feared he would not be able to become fit enough in time. However, he was given the go-ahead after gaining 26 pounds of muscle.

Each member of the wolf pack had to have papers proving their Native decent. Spencer is Lakota (Sioux), Pelletier is Cree-Metis, Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Gordon is Hualapai, and Houseman, who was discovered at an open casting call, is Cree.

Actors of the wolf pack went through "wolf camp" together to get buff and bond with each other.

First Review: Julie & Julia is a film that should be relished with gusto--accompanied by the freshest and best ingredients, pounds of butter, and bottles of the very best wine. It lovingly celebrates the life of one of American food's most influential and beloved figureheads: Julia Child--played here with zest, humor, and a sweet, subtle respect by Meryl Streep, whose performance is spectacular.

Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding.

Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime

Plot: Starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams and written and directed, in her most accomplished work to date, by Nora Ephron, this film adroitly combines two separate stories told by two different books (the characters never meet) that are linked not only by subject but also by theme. The first is Julia Child's, "My Life in France," a memoir by the celebrated cook, teacher and writer whose "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and accompanying "The French Chef" television show radically changed the American culinary landscape.

The second memoir, "Julie & Julia," follows writer Julie Powell as she works her way through a self-imposed quest: cooking all 524 recipes in Child's book, all specifically formulated for "the servantless American cook," in the space of one 365-day year.

These two books are linked not only by Powell's decision, or even by the authors' shared zeal for butter, but also by a similarity in personality and situation. Both women are unstoppable forces searching for something worth their involvement, and both find that cooking completes them, makes them feel alive in ways wonderful and unforeseen.

It's also worth noting that these two stories are tales, so to speak, of sisters doing it for themselves. Though both women have loyal and encouraging husbands (played by fine actors Stanley Tucci and Chris Messina) who are crucial to their success, this is the rare Hollywood film where it's the men who are the support team, not the women.

Goofs:

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When cooking Julia Child's classic boeuf bourguignon Julie uses a Bordeaux or Bordeaux style wine rather than the burgundy or burgundy style wine (Pinot Noir) called for in all beef bourguignon recipes (including Child's).

Anachronisms: In the final scene, Julia opens a large envelope from her publisher with a copy of her first cookbook inside (published by Knopf, 1961). The envelope is of the Bubble-Wrap variety. Bubble-Wrap itself didn't receive the US Patent (Number 3,142,599) until July 28, 1964. Envelopes of that type started appearing in the late 70's.

Revealing mistakes: Julia Child's mortar is shown as a white stone or porcelain in construction. The one on display in the Smithsonian's collection is very dark, almost black, stone.

Anachronisms: The Childs moved to Paris in 1948. There is a scene, fairly early during their stay, at a reception where one can hear a famous Charles Aznavour song in the background. Aznavour was writing for and performing with others then, and only became famous as a solo singer in 1953-54.

Anachronisms: Throughout the film, Stanley Tucci's glasses can be seen to have a modern anti-reflective coating on them, years before such coatings became available. The tell-tale green sheen on the lenses is particularly visible during the outdoor wedding party.

Anachronisms: The postal vehicle appearing in front of the Cambridge house, a DJ5, was not used until 1965. The scene in the movie is 1961 or earlier.

Revealing mistakes: The scene involving Paul Childs photographing a food display in their kitchen, he uses a Rolleiflex camera. While shooting he winds the crank approximately one-and-a-half turns, when loaded with film the transport only requires 2/3 of a turn and stops automatic. So actually he was using an empty camera.

Anachronisms: When Stanley Tucci is being questioned in Washington there is a pack of Lucky Strike in a green pack. Famously "Lucky Strike green went to war" because the ink contained chromium, a strategic material. Lucky Strike green never came back and the replacement design by Raymond Lowey in white which was introduced early in the war is still in use today and was in the 50s.

Boom mic visible: When Julia is at lunch with her co-authors and shows them a new recipe, the boom mic is visible when Julia is talking.

Anachronisms: In the scene where Julia receives a letter about publishing her first book in 1961 (or earlier). The letter carrier bears a blue and red patch with a horse and rider facing left. These patches did not come into service until 1965. The appropriate patch should be a maroon patch with the horse and rider facing the right (backwards) when warn on the left shoulder.

Anachronisms: The movie opens in 1949 in Paris. In several establishing shots, including the Ile de la Cite and Notre Dame Cathedral, all the buildings appear to be a light tan sandstone color. Until the cleaning projects by culture minister Andre Malreaux in the late 1960s, all the famous buildings in Paris were quite black from centuries of pollution.

Crew or equipment visible: When Julia is learning basic tasks with the other ladies at cooking school, during the shot one can see the checkered platform under Julia's feet to make her appear taller.

 Trivia:

Because of Meryl Streep's height (5'6") several camera/set/costume tricks had to be employed to mimic Julia Child's height (6'2"). Countertops were lowered, Streep wore extra high heels, and forced perspective camera angles were used.

Eric Powell's quote ("I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by") was originally made by Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Eric explains this himself, immediately after delivering the line.

Both the Paris and Boston train terminal shots were done in the beautifully restored New Jersey Transit Hoboken Train Terminal waiting room.

The first major motion picture based on a blog.

Plot: On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams nee Fuller is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being born an old man who was diagnosed with several aged diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

Goofs: We know about 26 goofs. Here some of them:

Crew or equipment visible: In the scene when Benjamin meets his daughter you can see a crew member's arm keeping the door to the studio closed.

Factual errors: Early in the film, a mechanical clock is shown being installed at a newly built station in New Orleans. It is later shown being replaced by a digital clock in 2002. However, no such station exists in New Orleans. Union Station was built in 1892 and replaced by Union Passenger Terminal in 1954. (The station, however is Grand Central Terminal in New York City.)

Continuity: In the hotel lobby, the cigarette pack Daisy put in her pocket was red, but the pack laid on the kitchen table was green.

Anachronisms: A 1940s radio jingle for Pepsi-Cola can be heard in the background during a daylight porch scene which, based on the film's chronology, should take place in the mid 1920s.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: As Benjamin watches Daisy in the ballet, he says via narration he'd never seen New York before that. Earlier in the film as he describes his tugboat route, the Statue of Liberty can clearly be seen in the background. However, this indicates he only saw New York in passing.

Anachronisms: In the scene where Benjamin has been alive for 17 years (making the date 1935) he walks out onto the street pursued by young Daisy. A modern day fire hydrant (with the anti-turn valve on top) can be seen on the street..

Continuity: When Benjamin first makes tea for the channel swimmer in the glass mugs, the level of liquid fluctuates with each camera shot.

Anachronisms: In the wharf scene when Benjamin joins the tugboat crew, two bridges are visible in the background. This event is prior to World War II. The first of these bridges was constructed beginning in 1954 and opened in 1958. The second was begun in 1981 and opened in 1988. Neither was there prior to World War II.

Continuity: When Benjamin first sees Daisy he comments on how blue her eyes are but when they age Daisy the young actress doesn't have blue eyes. They eventually revert to being blue when Cate Blanchett plays Daisy

Factual errors: Oti is referred to as a pygmy and refers to madjembe (a pygmy word for intestinal worms) which places him as a native of The Congo or Central African Republic. However, he tells Benjamin that his country has been divided by the English and Dutch. The Congo and Central African Republic were only colonized by Belgium while the English and Dutch colonized South Africa.

Factual errors: Oti is described as a pygmy but the newspaper article refers to him as a Bushman; However, this could just reflect the ignorance of the newspaper editor.

Anachronisms: The film seems to ignore the prohibition of alcohol from 1920-1932. It was only after prohibition that bourbon was widely available; prior to giving world-wide distribution of rye whiskey to Canada, when whiskey cocktails were made it was normally with the rye whiskey made by US distilleries. The original "Sazerac" was created in New Orleans in 1859 and named by John Stiller who owned the Sazerac Coffee House.

Anachronisms: In the scene where the analog clock is being taken down and replaced by a digital one, an ad for the U.S. Army National Guard is shown bearing the "Citizen/Soldier" advertisement. However, this ad was introduced in late 2007, which was a couple years after the end of the film, 2005.

Anachronisms: During the sequence after Benjamin leaves Daisy and their young daughter and travels through India, Benjamin is shown in front of a building which prominently features the phrase "ISO 9002". Based on the time sequence of the movie, this would be in the very late 1970s or perhaps 1980. ISO 9002 is among the internationally-recognized quality management certifications that were first introduced in 1987.

Trivia:

Filmmakers worked closely with Levi's to obtain clothing items from their Levi's Vintage Clothing collection to authenticate various time periods captured throughout the film.
