First Review:New Moon, the second in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster teen-fiction saga adapted for film, is stronger than its predecessor, Twilight. Director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass), taking the helm from Catherine Hardwicke, brings a lighter, more assured touch to the sequel, which continues the star-crossed love story of mortal Bella (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson). Incidentally, Edward is absent for most of the film; after an accident on Bella's birthday reminds Edward that her life is always at risk when he's around, he chooses to abandon her, sending her into a deep depression. The only person who helps her heal her broken heart is her friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner), a member of the Quileute tribe who, as he grows taller, beefier, and more aggressive (with less clothing), comes to realize he's not entirely human either. But even his love for Bella doesn't prevent her from throwing herself in the path of danger, because that's the only time she can see visions of Edward. One such fateful misunderstanding sends Edward into the coven of the Volturi (a sort of vampire Mafia, if you will), where the most dangerous vampires hold both Edward and Bella's fate in their cold, dark hands. Much of New Moon rests on the shoulders of Lautner, so scrawny in Twilight, who famously packed on the muscle to avoid getting recast. He's very nearly successful in carrying the load, but the cheese-tastic beefcake scenes disservice him, and Jacob and Bella's complicated friendship stumbles on its way to any kind of love triangle. Some of that blame lies with Stewart, who understandably holds her emotions close to her chest but reveals much too little (c'mon, even an angsty girl has to be a little joyful in the arms of two different hunks). As is with the book, the film is just a bridge between sagas, so the plot drags and not a lot happens. Fortunately, while Twilight was trapped in its own self-consciousness, the wobbly-legged cast seems to have found stronger footing in New Moon; the jokes come faster, the writing (by Melissa Rosenberg, who also scribed Twilight) is a hair wittier. (Even Pattinson seems more comfortable in Edward's skin.) The Volturi, highlighted by Michael Sheen's Aro and Dakota Fanning's Jane, also make an all-too-brief impression, but at least there's more to look forward to when Eclipse, the third installment, is released.

Plot: On her 18th birthday, Bella Swan wakes up from a dream in which she sees herself as an old woman. She expresses her distaste with growing older than her boyfriend Edward Cullen, a vampire who stopped aging at 17. Edward's family throws Bella a birthday party. While unwrapping a gift, Bella gets a paper cut, which causes Edward's adoptive brother, Jasper, to be overwhelmed by her blood's scent and attempt to kill her. Realizing the danger he and his family pose to Bella, Edward decides to end their relationship, and the Cullens move away from Forks, Washington.

Edward's departure leaves Bella heartbroken and depressed for months. However, when her father, Charlie, attempts to send her to live with her mother, Bella agrees to spend time with her friends. After seeing a movie with Jessica, Bella sees a group of men who remind her of a time when Edward rescued her previously, and she is surprised to see a vision of Edward warning her against approaching them. Bella discovers that all thrill-seeking activities grant her visions of Edward. She also finds comfort in her deepening friendship with Jacob Black, a cheerful companion who eases her pain over losing Edward. When Jacob is unable to see Bella for weeks, she discovers that he is a werewolf, an age-old enemy of vampires. Jacob's pack members are on constant patrol for Victoria, a vampire searching to kill Bella, leaving Jacob little time to spend with Bella. Alone, Bella returns to seeking thrill-inducing activities.

A series of miscommunications leads Edward to believe that Bella has killed herself while cliff-diving. Distraught over her supposed suicide, Edward flees to Italy to provoke the Volturi, a powerful coven of vampires who are capable of killing him. Alice, Edward's adoptive sister, and Bella rush to Italy to save Edward, and arrive just in time to stop him. However, the Volturi decide that Bella, a human who knows that vampires exist, must either be killed or transformed into a vampire herself. Alice stops them from killing her by showing them a vision of the future in which Bella has been transformed. Once they return home to Forks, Edward tells Bella that he has always loved her and only left town to protect her. She forgives him, and the Cullens vote in favor of Bella being transformed into a vampire, to Edward and Jacob's dismay. Edward gives Bella a choice: either she lets Alice change her after their graduation, or, if Bella agrees to marry him, he will change her himself. However, Jacob reminds them of a treaty the Cullens have made with the werewolves: they will not attack each other, as long as the Cullens never bite a human.

Goofs:

Revealing mistakes: At the birthday party, when Dr. Cullen is stitching Bella up, they show a close up of a syringe with a type of liquid in it. Regardless of the type of liquid, in order to inject anything into the human body, the syringe must be free of air bubbles. The syringe clearly has a large bubble of air.

Continuity: While Bella and Edward are embracing each other right after they met up in Volterra and are interrupted, Edward's body is not completely "whited-out", only his face is. This is going on the entire time he is speaking to someone in the Volturri. His face is extremely pale, but his neck and abdomen is the color of a human being.

Continuity: After fighting with the Volturi, Edward's robe changes between being tied closed and completely open.

Revealing mistakes: In the scene in Bella's bedroom after Edward's return, the camera shakes as if someone has bumped into it.

Continuity: In the scene when Bella first joins her friends at the table in the school cafeteria after her long depression, as she is talking to Mike, if you look at her hair by her left ear, you can see a bobby pin that may have fallen out of her hair piece or is just not hidden well. When the scenes changes to Mike and then back to Bella the bobby pin is gone.

Continuity: During the scene where Charlie is telling Bella she is going back to Jacksonville because of her depression, the part in Bella's hair changes slightly between shots.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Ben takes the fingerprint of Abigail to be able to descent to the conservation room via the lift. When in the elevator, he removes his glove. He should have kept it to be able to call the lift again.

Continuity: Bella's hair color changes frequently. In some shots it is clearly black, whilst in others it is Bella's normal brown. This is because the actress portraying her, Kristen Stewart, cut and dyed her hair during filming.

  Trivia:

Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight (2008/I), the first movie in the Twilight Saga, was set to be the director of 'New Moon' as well. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, Hardwicke had to back out.

After months of speculation and rumors, director Chris Weitz and the novel's author, Stephenie Meyer, confirmed on her official website that Taylor Lautner would be reprising his role as Jacob Black. It was doubted as the filmmakers feared he would not be able to become fit enough in time. However, he was given the go-ahead after gaining 26 pounds of muscle.

Each member of the wolf pack had to have papers proving their Native decent. Spencer is Lakota (Sioux), Pelletier is Cree-Metis, Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Gordon is Hualapai, and Houseman, who was discovered at an open casting call, is Cree.

Actors of the wolf pack went through "wolf camp" together to get buff and bond with each other.

This is the first (and to date only) time director Chris Weitz handles a movie about vampires.
Director Chris Weitz said this was a easier process than his other film The Golden Compass (2007) as he found "a lot less interference from Summit [Entertainment] and a lot more understanding of the books than New Line had of The Golden Compass" - which Chris said ended up being "completely re-cut" by the studio. He thinks that Summit Entertainment "understands the importance of the [Twilight] books - members of which who have read the books and appreciate them - not just see them as engines of possible profit".

First Review:Nick (Evans) is a "mover" - someone who can move things with his mind. He meets up with Cassie (Fanning), a "watcher" - someone who can predict the future. She is trying to rescue her mother from the government, but as they try to piece things together, Kira (Belle) enters their lives. Kira is a "pusher" - someone who can influence others thoughts. She also had a relationship with Nick, and is the only person to survive a power "enhancement" drug that was administered to her by the sinister Company. Now, the Company is after her, and Nick and Kira must help her if they want to survive.

"Push" is a gritty looking superhero movie that is not based on any existing comic book (for a change). It is fast paced and rich in mythology. Evans, who has some experience in these types of movies, is credible as Nick. Fanning, who is great in any movie she appears in, can add action star to her resume. The story is full of backstory, but that does not slow down the almost nonstop action. The gritty look adds to the feel of the film, and works well. "Push" is a surprisingly good film, and I recommend checking it out.

Plot:

A group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities are hiding from a clandestine U.S. government agency. They must utilize their different talents and band together for a final job enabling them to escape the agency forever

Lucky Number Slevin director Paul McGuigan takes the helm for this action thriller concerning a group of telekinetic American ex-patriots who band together in an attempt to take down the clandestine government agency that's genetically transforming normal citizens into powerful psychic warriors. The Division is a shadowy government operation devoted to making humankind the ultimate weapon. Those who accept this transformation have the power to move objects with the mind, see the future before it happens, create new realities, and dispense of their enemies without so much as a single touch; those who are unwilling to participate are immediately terminated. Nick Gant (Chris Evans) is a mover , a second-generation telekinetic who went into hiding after the Division killed his father more than a decade earlier. He lives a life of anonymity in Hong Kong, a densely populated place where fugitive psychics such as himself are safe as long as they can keep their unique gift secret. Suddenly into Nick's life comes 13-year-old watcher Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning), a clairvoyant who needs his help in tracking down escaped pusher Kira, who may hold the key to bringing down the Division once and for all. A pusher is the most powerful kind of psychic due to their ability to influence the actions of others by planting thoughts in their minds. Now, as Nick emerges from hiding in order to help Cassie find Kira, the Division's human bloodhounds are hot on their trail. In order to elude the authorities, they'll need to disappear into the seedy underbelly of the city while relying on a team of rogue psychics to help cover their tracks. But Division Agent Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou) is a powerful pusher who has made it his mission to stop them at all costs, regardless of the collateral damages that may occur in the process.

  Goofs:

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the credits, Kira's last name is Hudson, but in an earlier scene, Carver calls her Kira Hollis.

Continuity: When Nick grabs two guns to go after Henry Carver at the Chinese restaurant, he puts one under his shirt in front and one behind his back. Then he is shown walking through the street with a gun obviously under his shirt in front as he's walking. Then he arrives at the restaurant and lifts the two guns from his back under his shirt.

Crew or equipment visible: When Nick is using his power to put the gun to Carver's head in the Chinese food restaurant. You can see the wires holding the guns in mid air several times throughout the scene.

Plot holes: When Cassie questions nick on the length of her note, she asks if all the notes were that complicated. he replies, "I knew you could handle it." Earlier, though, Nick had his memory wiped, so there is no way he'd know what any of the notes said.

Revealing mistakes: When Nick grabs has the two guns up in the air above him in the Chinese restaurant, you see him in the ceiling mirrors, but the guns do not have a reflection in these ceiling mirrors. And they should since the guns are very near these gold-colored mirrors.

     Trivia:

Shipped to theaters under the code name "Kinetic".

Lead actor Chris Evans came to director Paul McGuigan's attention through his performance in Danny Boyle's Sunshine (2007), another science-fiction film.

The choice to shoot the film in Hong Kong was inspired by the classic film Casablanca (1942). Indeed, director Paul McGuigan explains that in the thirties and forties, Casablanca was a den for scoundrels and the perfect place to hide as everyone could go there. To the makers of the film, Hong Kong was the 2000's equivalent to Casablanca.

Director Paul McGuigan tried to limit the use of digital effects as much as possible, recalling the great directors who didn't have such means available to them yet made up for them with their imagination. In fact the only scenes in which green screens were used were the car chases, as Hong Kong traffic is very heavy.

The idea of a government agency controlling people with special abilities for military and/or intelligence uses is in fact inspired by real-life experiments of the US government, particularly the long-running Stargate Project.

Plot: During the opening credits, a narrator (Dakota Fanning) tells us how those with abilities have been involved with the government since 1945. The opening scene shows two Movers, Nick Gant and his father on the run from the "Division". Realizing that escape is impossible, Nick's father tells him of a vision he received from a Watcher; a girl will give him a flower and he is to do what she says in order to "save us all." He then throws him through an air vent as Agent Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou) of Division arrives. Nick's father then fights the Agents, taking out only two (on screen) before he is killed while Nick escapes.

Ten years later, the American Division is testing a potentially deadly augmentation drug on a Pusher named Kira (Camilla Belle). While the test seems like a failure, when the doctor moves in to check Kira's pulse, she reveals herself to be alive (the one and only to ever live). Knocking the doctor out, Kira steals his card and a syringe which has the drug in it and escapes with the help of her enhanced abilities and interference from a nearly-catatonic Watcher.

Revealing mistakes: When the 'safety inspector' credentials are presented to the guard at the building, they are obviously in English. Yet the guard and the location are in Hong Kong. They should have been in Cantonese.

Trivia:

Shipped to theaters under the code name "Kinetic".

Lead actor Chris Evans came to director Paul McGuigan's attention through his performance in Danny Boyle's
Sunshine (2007), another science-fiction film.

In order to deal with the constant bustle of Hong Kong, director Paul McGuigan and the crew decided to shoot the film "guerilla-style", with the cameras hidden in vans, filming through small holes, and the actors doing their scenes in one take on the streets.

The scene where Camilla Belle's character Kira is kidnapped in a crowded street at gunpoint was filmed with no visible crew around, the camera being hidden in a van, yet no passers-by reacted.

A comic book mini-series prequel to the film was written by Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman with art by Bruno Redondo. It is published by WildStorm, an imprint of DC Comics.

The different type of psychics in the film are Movers (who can move objects with their mind), Pushers (who can control other peoples' thoughts), Watchers (who can see the future), Bleeders (who emit high-pitched screams that can burst blood vessels), Sniffs (who can track people), Shifters (who can temporarily change what an object looks like to others), Wipers (who can wipe memory), Shadows (who can cloak themselves and others around them from detection) and Stitchers (who can heal or unheal people).

Director Paul McGuigan was much more interested in the character element of the picture than in its action element, stating that though it was an action movie, the characters were very developed, much more so than in most such genre films.

The subject of the film piqued director Paul McGuigan's interest and led him to find out all that he could about it on the Internet, some of which he found quite incredible, notably in the experiments conducted during the Cold War by both the Soviets and the Americans.

Plot:Coraline Jones moves into the Pink Palace Apartments in Ashland, Oregon with her loving but work-consumed parents. While exploring the nearby forest, Coraline encounters a stray black cat and an odd boy who tends it named Wybie Lovat. She also befriends long-retired actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, and an acrobat named Mr. Bobinsky.

While exploring her apartment, Coraline finds a small door closed by bricks. Awakened that night by a button-eyed "jumping mouse", she follows it to discover a passage extending beyond the miniature door, which leads her to an alternate version of the house grounds called the "Other World". Upon arrival therein, Coraline meets button-eyed doppelgangers of her mother and father, who claim to be her "Other" parents. These figures guide her to a more luxurious and attractive version of the house and its surroundings. The Other Mother and Father celebrate her presence with delicious food, a beautiful, enchanted garden, and the affection Coraline feels she is missing in her own world.

Coraline continues visiting the Other World, where she is entertained by the "Other" versions of Wybie and the neighbors. The black cat, who can speak when in the Other World, informs Coraline that the Other Mother and her world are a trap set to entice children who believe themselves neglected. Coraline refuses to believe this until the Other Mother offers for her to stay in the Other World if she will sew buttons over her eyes. Coraline demands to return to her real parents, angering the Other Mother into assuming a tall, wretched form and trapping her in a small room behind a mirror as punishment. There she finds three ghost children who previously fell into the hands of the Other Mother and lost their eyes and souls to her.

Trivia:

Neil Gaiman told the audience at a reading in Hamburg (Germany) on March 21st 2007 that the music will be by They Might Be Giants.

In the trailer, when they show Coraline's other father he is wearing Monkeybone slippers. Monkeybone (2001) was another film directed by Henry Selick.

Coraline has also been made into a stage musical, produced by MCC Theater in New York, with music and lyrics by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields.

At one hour and forty minutes long, this is the longest stop-motion film to date.

The first stop-motion animated feature to be shot entirely in 3-D.

In Quebec, the French version features the voices of Catherine Brunet, 'Genevieve Brouillette' and Jean-Michel Anctil.

The Ghost Children call the Other Mother a "beldam". A glance at the dictionary will reveal that the word has two meanings: "an old, ugly woman", or "grandmother".

The red lighthouse visible in one of the snow globes Corline places on the shelf was modeled after Big Red, the lighthouse at the Holland State park in Holland, Mi.

The original sweater the design team had designed for Coraline's father sported a big maize-and-blue University of Michigan logo. However producer Bill Mechanic decided to change the design in favor of his alma mater - Michigan State.

The 'Ranft Bros. Moving Company' that moves Coraline's family into their home, are based on real-life brothers Jerome Ranft and Joe Ranft. Both brothers did work on The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) with Director Henry Selick. The mover at the front door (who is given the $1.00 tip) is modeled after Joe Ranft.

The band They Might Be Giants wrote 10 songs for the movie, but a change in tone from a musical to more dark production meant that all but one was cut; a scene in which Coraline's other father sings along with a piano features John Linnell's voice. The band has said they will release the other songs created for the movie in other projects, including albums.

The "Detroit Zoo" snow globe featured in the film contains a model of The Horace Rackham Memorial Fountain, or the "Bear Fountain," sculpted by Corrado Parducci in 1939 as the centerpiece of the Detroit Zoo's reflecting pool.

During a trapeze act in the 'Other World,' Ms Spink and Ms Forcible quote from William Shakespeare's play, 'Hamlet'. The words they speak are part of a speech that Hamlet gives to a pair of courtiers.

Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the Russian Hero Medal for Service at the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster on April 26, 1986. Which reads on the front "Participant in the clean-up campaign" The "4A3C" indicates "Chernobilskaya Nuclear Power Plant." This medal is unique as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his skin complexion and odd behavior.

In the Other World the Other Mother is making Coraline an omelette. She cracks and egg and when it drops in to the bowl you can see that the egg yolk is the face of Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas, The (1993).

The face on the dollar bill given to the mover for a tip is director, Henry Selick.

The Coraline shoot lasted over 18 months, following 2 years of pre-production.

Over 130 sets were built across 52 different stages at the studios; spanning 183,000 square feet, the 52 different stages where the most ever deployed for a stop-motion animated feature.

To Construct 1 puppet of Coraline, 10 individuals had to work 3-4 months.

For the Character of Coraline, there were 28 different puppets of varying sizes; the main Coraline puppet stands 9.5 inches high.

At one point in the movie, Coraline shows 16 different expressions in a span of 35 seconds.

There were at total of 207,336 possible face combinations for Coraline.

Coraline marks the first time that a stop-motion animated morphing sequence has ever been accomplished, the sequence runs for 130 frames, or nearly 6 seconds.

There are 248 Scottie Dogs in the audience with Coraline and Wybie watching the stage performance.

1,300 square feet of fake fur was applied to stand in for lice and/or dead grass.
