Taking pieces from Running Man, Death Race, and even from their first two films in the Crank series, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor depict a grim look at society, and where we could be going from where we are today. In between all the lustful scenes and carnage, Neveldine and Taylor try to create a commentary on where our society is going. The rich and controlling puppet masters, to the puppets whose lives are completely in control by the puppet masters.

Gamer is a natural progression for the directors of the Crank films to create, and the movie is the perfect blend of cinema meets a video game, with all of the chaotic screen candy to boot. We are treated to three different realms: Society (where "gamers" control actors in an "anything goes world" - The Sims to the extreme level); Slayers (where convicts are controlled in the ultimate bloody battle grounds); and the real world (somewhere where mundane life just exists). Normally a film such as Gamer would feature "B" rated actors, however, it appears that Liongrate has gone all out with this film. Gerald Butler (300, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) is at the top of his game, along with Amber Valletta (Transporter 2), and Alison Lohman (Drag Me to Hell). Also along for the ride, although a bit underused, were Zoe Bell (Grindhouse), Milo Ventimiglia (Hereos, Rocky Balboa), John Leguizamo (Spawn), and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer). The only two performances that were lacking in the over-the-top performance by Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and the rapper turned actor Ludacris.

Plot: In 2034, mind-control technology has taken society by storm. Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) has revolutionized the gaming industry with his invention of self-replicating nanites. The nanites colonize in the brain, gradually taking over the existing brain cells and allowing full control of all motor functions by a third party. The first off-shoot of this technology was Society, an online community in which gamers pay to control a real person in a pseudo community, much like current simulated worlds such as Second Life. Those who work as characters in Society are paid for their participation, unlike Castle's latest creation, Slayers. A multiplayer, first-person shooter game, Slayers allows gamers to control death row prisoners in mass-scale death matches. Any inmate who lives through 30 matches wins his freedom. Simon, a 17-year old trust fund baby (Logan Lerman), controls Kable (Gerard Butler), the online champion of the game, having won 27 matches and lived through them all. Slayers and Society are hugely popular, making Castle the richest man in America within a matter of weeks. However, Castle's organization is the target of a activist group called Humanz, who claim the nanite technology has a more ominous purpose. When a virus hacks into the video mainstreams broadcasting a message from the elusive rebel group, Simon is offered the chance to communicate with Kable while in-game, which is not allowed. After a stranger gives Kable a warning that the game's mastermind plans to kill him, Kable asks Simon to relinquish control and uses the opportunity to escape.

Kable is taken to the rebels' leader (Ludacris) who explains that the mind control technology used on Kable and the other Slayers can potentially be used without discretion on anyone, leading to the extinction of independent thought. He also gives Kable directions to where he can break his wife out of Society, where she has been working as a character since his incarceration. Kable arrives, and, after a brief shootout with security, manages to escape with his wife. While the rebels attempt to deactivate the cells from his wife's mind that make the mind control possible, Kable is taken into another room. The leader reveals that Kable was once a soldier, working on a future cellular control project. His friend was the first to receive the cell transplant. However, Castle decided to discover the true limits of the mind control and force Kable to kill his friend, leading to his conviction for first-degree murder and subsequent death row sentence.

Some four years later, the game Slayers came out, with Kable as one of the leading stars. Kable is then informed that his daughter has been placed with a foster family...Castle himself. Kable infiltrates Castles' mansion, but is confronted by Castle who is singing and dancing to music, all the while forcing other death row inmates to dance along with him. After a brief fight between Kable and the inmates, Castle leads him into a room with a large basketball court. Castle reveals that he also received the transplant, however, the cellular structure in him allows him to control anyone else who has the cells. This is proven when, having obtained a knife, Kable attempts to kill Castle only to find himself frozen still. Castle then savagely beats Kable and brings in his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, rebel members manage to broadcast their confrontation all over the world.

Kable is forced to crawl to his family, and Castle then attempts to force him to kill his own daughter. After a brief struggle of wills, Kable manages to move the knife away. Simon then returns in control of Kable and, using his controller software that he uses to control Kable in-game, Kable tricks Castle into using his controlling cells to stab himself in the stomach. After Castle dies, Kable requests for Castles' employees, who have been watching, to release the family from their control. They do this, and, with the words "Well played, Kable", depart. The movie then ends with Kable driving through a tunnel in Glacier National Park with his daughter and wife in the car

Goofs:

• Revealing mistakes: In the scene showing the pyramids in Egypt, the word "Kable" is displayed backwards in Arabic letters. Since Arabic is read from right to left, the way it is shown in the movie, it would be read as "Lebaak".
• Revealing mistakes: Another mistake of writing "kable" using Arabic letters is that they are not connected. In languages where Arabic letters are used for writing, letters of a word should be connected otherwise it is not readable (or very difficult to read).

Trivia:

• The motorcycle driven by Trace is a Buell Firebolt.
• The opening montage of time-lapse shots and other scenes of the world where we see ads for Kable and/or graffiti of Ken Castle overlaid on buildings or walls are mostly taken from Ron Fricke's wordless film Baraka (1992), for example, the shots of the Giza Pyramids, India, homeless man sleeping under a bridge among others.
• The news anchors are played by "Psych" (2006) co-stars James Roday and Maggie Lawson who as of the film's release, were also in their third year of a relationship.

Inevitably, things happen that make their paths cross, they don't get along, he breaks all the rules, does not fit her criteria. Yes, she has a list, in her head, of what she wants, in a man. We are not like robots going 'this.. person.. fits.. my.. criteria, activate attraction mechanism now. Attraction is not a choice. When you feel attraction for someone special the more you accept it the stronger it gets, the more you resist it the stronger it gets, because what you resist persists. What I noticed watching this movie is that both men and women enjoyed it.

I laughed out loud at Butler's brash manner. The women would be silent at such moments, and the women would laugh at other moments. It has been a terrible year for comedies so far. The best I have seen has been Hangover by far. This is the second best. Go ahead and enjoy it.

Plot: Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a morning show TV producer in Sacramento, California. Coming home from a disastrous date one night, she happens to see a segment of a local television show, "The Ugly Truth", run by Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), whose cynicism about relationships prompts Abby to call into the show to argue with him on-air. The next day, she discovers that the station is threatening to cancel her show because of its poor ratings, and the station owner has hired Mike to do a segment on her show to bring them back up.

At first, the two have a rocky relationship; Abby thinks Mike is crass and disgusting while Mike finds Abby to be a control freak. Nevertheless, when she meets the man of her dreams, a doctor named Colin (Eric Winter) living next to her, Mike persuades her to follow his lead. She agrees to his helpful advice and if he can get her the man she wants, proving his theories on relationships, she will work happily with him, but if Mike fails, he agrees to quit.

Mike succeeds in improving the ratings of the show, helps bring the married co-anchors closer together, and successfully guides Abby to be exactly what Colin would want. Mike is invited to appear on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and is being offered the chance to move to another network. Abby is forced to cancel a romantic weekend away with Colin, during which they had planned to finally sleep together, and instead go with Mike and persuade him to stay with the morning show. After the show, they go for drinks and dancing, and Mike admits he doesn't want to move and is happier to stay in Sacramento with his sister and nephew. In the elevator, they passionately kiss and almost get to the point of intense sex but leave for their separate rooms when the doors open. Mike, dealing with his inner conflict of the intensity of his feelings for Abby, calls on her room only to find Colin has shown up to surprise her. He leaves Abby to be with Colin. Abby is upset and soon realizes Colin only likes the woman she has been pretending to be, not the real her, and she breaks up with him.

Mike leaves for another local station, but ends up doing an outside broadcast at the same hot-air balloon festival as Abby, and he cannot resist returning to argue with her when she kicks the new "Mike Chadway" imitator off the air and goes into a tirade about men. The balloon they are standing in takes off while they argue and finally, Abby tells Mike she broke up with Colin, and Mike admits he loves her. Abby then kisses him and they are shown kissing passionately while flying off in the balloon. Despite their obvious differences, they stay together and at the end of the movie, are shown having intense sex. Mike, unsure of whether he's taught Abby how to fake too well, asks if her response at climax was genuine after the lights are switched on. Abby responds by smiling and saying he'll never know before shutting off the lights again.

Goofs:

• Continuity: In the beginning of the movie, when the boss is in the meeting room about to introduce Mike, the picture frames of Larry and Georgia in the background alternate between shots.
• Factual errors: Various cast members refer to the local Sacramento station morning show as "a network" or "network program" when it appears that this is just a local TV station.
• Continuity: In the scene where Abby meets Mike in the Hotel Lobby, a girl in a blue dress is scene behind Mike then as Abby walks in the other direction the same girl is behind Abby now.
• Continuity: After the visit to the Late Late Show, Abby and Mike are at a club. While they are sitting and talking, her hands do not match up between the different shots. Sometimes she's holding the glass and in the next shot it's gone and then back in her hand. The drink she has also changes in amount throughout the shots.
• Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the scene where Abby gets out of the car at the hotel in LA, the sentences she mumbles clearly aren't they same ones her mouth moves to.
• Continuity: In the scene where Mike is helping Abby talk to Colin on the phone, they put Colin on hold and the light on the phone is green. As the scene switches back and forth you can see at one point the light on the phone is red but then it switches back to being green with Colin still on hold.
• Revealing mistakes: During the scene when Abby is on the "kiss cam" at the baseball game, the Devils are shown to be leading, 4-1. However, after the batter has promptly hit a single, neither team is shown to have a hit.

Plot: Anything can happen on Nims Island, a magical place ruled by a young girls imagination. It is an existence that mirrors that of her favorite literary character, Alex Rover - the worlds greatest adventurer. But Alexandra, the author of the Rover books, leads a reclusive life in the big city. When Nims father goes missing from their island, a twist of fate brings her together with Alexandra. Now they must draw courage from their fictional hero, Alex Rover, and find strength in one another to conquer Nims Island.

Goofs:

• Revealing mistakes: When Alexandra Rover opens for the first time her front door, the knob turns to the right to open the door. When she opens the door the next time the knob is turning to the left.
• Factual errors: The characters refer to a tropical storm as a "Monsoon" when they should be calling it a "Typhoon" (or more accurately, as they are in the South Pacific, a "Cyclone").
• Factual errors: Alex takes a small plane to Roratonga. The island of Roratonga has an airport that can land a 747. There are direct flights from Hawaii and New Zealand. The only small airplane flights are to/from smaller neighboring islands.

Trivia:

• Lulu Mickelson, the daughter of producer/screenwriter Paula Mazur, appears briefly in the airport scene as a passenger waiting in line at the security checkpoint.
• The Australian sea lions used in the film are named Spud and Friday. Both reside at Sea World Australia, and shared the role of Selkie.
